The Kijani Project intends to be an sustainable business initiative for rural Africa. The aim of Kijani is to align the goals of biodiversity conservation, sustainable economic growth and poverty alleviation. “Kijani” is the Kiswahili word for “green” or “greenery” and reflects the Project’s biodiversity focus.
The Kijani Project is currently envisioned as a 12 year, €35 million project. The Project will work with some 50 investment opportunities taking these through various steps of the Kijani bio-business investment process from identification to exit. From this pipeline, up to 20 businesses will be financed and managed through to a sustainable exit.The project will be successful if it: - develops a portfolio of sustainable African bio business investments;
- mainstreams biodiversity into existing African finance facilities; and
- leads to the development of a bio-capital fund for rural Africa.
